Flash Flood Warning

Statement as of 4:56 PM MDT on July 31, 2010

Expires 9:45 PM EDT on July 31, 2010

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
north central Pinal County in south central Arizona...
this includes the towns of Queen Valley... Florence Junction...
and nearby deserts.

* Until 645 PM MST

* at 444 PM MST... thunderstorms with very heavy rain were developing
in the Queen Valley area... just off Highway 60 a few miles
northeast of Florence Junction. Rainfall rates were on the
order of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour... enough to cause flood or
flash flooding of normally dry washes. The Queen Valley area
   floods easily.

* Locations in the warning include but are not limited to Queen
Valley

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Warning means that people along the banks of washes and
creeks should move to higher ground immediately. Normally dry washes
and streams will suddenly have running water and make unbridged
crossings impassable. Streets... underpasses... and low spots will
become inundated making driving hazardous in the warned area.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of normally
dry washes and creeks roads and low lying spots. Unbridged crossings
will be especially dangerous.

Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 3:43 PM MDT on July 31, 2010

Expires 3:00 AM EDT on August 01, 2010

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a

* small stream Flood Advisory for...
south central Gila County in east central Arizona...

* until 545 PM MST

* at 345 PM MST National Weather Service meteorologists detected
showers and thunderstorms producing locally heavy rain over portions
of south central Gila County. Radar estimates rainfall amounts on
the order of 1.5 to 2 inches over the past hour. The heaviest
rainfall amounts have been observed between cutter and Peridot...
mainly south of US Highway 70.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Do not drive your vehicle

your report to the National Weather Service forecast office.

328 PM MST Sat Jul 31 2010

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until midnight MST tonight...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of east-central Arizona and south-central Arizona...
including the following areas... in east-central Arizona... southern
Gila County/Tonto National Forest foothills. In south-central
Arizona... greater Phoenix area... northwest Maricopa County...
northwest and north central Pinal County and southwest Maricopa
County.

* Until midnight MST tonight

* the airmass over south central Arizona is extremely wet and
moderately unstable. Scattered to numerous showers and
thunderstorms will continue to develop this afternoon and will
continue into the evening hours tonight. Even moderate
thunderstorms have the potential to produce very heavy rainfall
which could lead to flash flooding. Saturated ground from previous
rainfall will exacerbate the effects of the heavy rain... and will
cause even greater flooding concerns. Heavy rainfall has already
been observed across portions of south central Arizona this
afternoon... and rainfall amounts greater than one inch have
occurred in less than 45 minutes. Several Urban and Small Stream
flood advisories have been issued in the watch area as of 3 PM.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that flooding of washes... creeks and other
drainage areas is possible within the watch area. If you are in the
watch area... you should watch the weather and be prepared to take
immediate action should heavy rain and flooding occur or a Flash
Flood Warning be issued.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
danger of flash floods. If flash flooding is observed... act quickly.
Seek higher ground immediately. When driving... turn around and seek
another Route. Turn around... don't drown.

Stay up-to-date on the latest forecasts by listening to weather radio
on the public service band. More detailed information is available

Public Information Statement

Statement as of 4:56 PM MDT on July 31, 2010

A Flash Flood Warning has just been issued for a portion of
south-central or southwest Arizona... or far southeast California.
Please follow these safety rules if flash flooding or severe weather
threatens your area.

Area residents should monitor flood conditions... and be prepared to
move to higher ground should flood waters threaten. If flash
flooding is observed... act quickly. Do not stay in areas subject to
flooding when water begins to rise... especially normally dry washes.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of floods and flash floods. It is very difficult at night to
tell how much water is on roads. Motorists should not drive through
water of unknown depth.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the roadway.
The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely
and the Road beneath may not be intact. Vehicles caught in rising
water should be abandoned quickly. It only takes a foot or two of
flowing water to wash most cars away.

Remember... most deaths in flash flooding occur in automobiles. Do
not attempt to cross bridges... dips... or low water crossings if
water covers the roadway. Never try to cross a flowing wash... even
a small one... on foot. Do not drive around barricades. If your
vehicle stalls... abandon it immediately and seek higher ground.

During heavy rains... keep children away from storm drains... water
catchments... and washes. Shallow... gently flowing water can become a
raging torrent in a matter of minutes.

A sudden downpour may cut visibility to near zero. Wind-driven rain
may hamper both driver and pedestrian. When faced with such weather
conditions... be especially cautious and proceed slowly within your
range of sight.

Hikers and campers should immediately climb to higher ground when a
warning is issued for the area or when flooding is observed.
